Naive Modus Ponens

چکیده

In his [2011], Lionel Shapiro proposes a very interesting deflationist conception of logical consequence, according to which the logical-consequence predicate applying to sentences serves as a merely expressive device allowing us to talk in a generalising way about typically non-linguistic entailment facts (just as, according to a deflationist conception of truth, the truth predicate applying to sentences serves as a merely expressive device allowing us to talk in a generalising way about typically non-linguistic facts). Entailment facts are in turn facts expressed using a certain suitably strong conditional (henceforth written as ⇒), just as conjunctive facts are facts expressed using a conjunction operator. (I’ll assume with Shapiro that there are such facts and that we have a workable conception of them; when talking in English, I’ll express them using the canonical construction

On the joint verification of Modus Ponens and Modus Tollens in fuzzy logic

This paper deals with the joint verification of the inequalities of Modus Ponens and Modus Tollens in Fuzzy Logic. Although the case of Modus Ponens was partially considered before, the case of Modus Tollens and the joint satisfaction of both inequalities are studied by the first time. The cases of R-implications, Simplications, Q-implications and MamdaniLarsen implications are separatedly cons...

Are Some Modus Ponens Arguments Deductively Invalid?

This article concerns the structure of defeasible arguments like: 'if Bob has red spots, Bob has the measles; Bob has red spots; therefore Bob has the measles.' The issue is whether such arguments have the form of modus ponens or not. Either way there is a problem. If they don't have the form of modus ponens, the common opinion to the contrary taught in leading logic textbooks is wrong. But if ...

Residual implications derived from uninorms satisfying Modus Ponens

Modus Ponens is a key property for fuzzy implication functions that are going to be used in fuzzy inference processes. In this paper it is investigated when fuzzy implication functions derived from uninorms via residuation, usually called RU implications, satisfy the modus ponens with respect to a continuous t-norm T , or equivalently, when they are T -conditionals. For RU -implications it is p...

Truth Without Detachment

These lectures are based (closely) on a current (in-progress) book project. The general topic concerns truth, paradox, and logic. My aim is to motivate, advance and a defend a new approach within the family of paraconsistent approaches to transparent truth. Specifically, I aim to motivate a ‘detachment-free’ view. In short: we enjoy a transparent truth predicate in a language free of any ‘detac...

Human reasoning with imprecise probabilities: Modus ponens and denying the antecedent

The modus ponens (A → B, A ∴ B) is, along with modus tollens and the two logically not valid counterparts denying the antecedent (A → B,¬A ∴ ¬B) and affirming the consequent, the argument form that was most often investigated in the psychology of human reasoning. The present contribution reports the results of three experiments on the probabilistic versions of modus ponens and denying the antec...

To Modus

A COUNTEREXAMPLE TO MODUS PONENS* T HE rule of modus ponens, which tells us that from an indicative conditional rlf cjJ then 1/1 l, 1 together with its antecedent cjJ, one can infer 1/1, is one of the fundamental principles of logic. 2 Yet, as the following examples show, it is not strictly valid; there are occasions on which one has good grounds for believing the premises of an application of ...
